I swear this is about my friend…not me…
I can’t believe Facebook hasn’t come up with this yet. I mean they have come up with things like daily gifts, vampire ninja games and bumper stickers, but they haven’t come up with something so basic that I feel like many of us heart broken or pissed off ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends want.
So let’s say I break up with a guy and it may or may not be hard for me to see his information show up on my news feed or have him appear in my updated friends list. BUT I don’t want to defriend him because there might come a day where I won’t mind that anymore.
I can block other people from seeing my profile but what I WANT is for me to block myself from seeing his or from his information to show up in any of my stuff. The ex-boyfriend would never have to know because I still show up in his news feeds, therefore he has no indication that I’ve altered anything.
So right now, I have no options other than to defriend and with that comes a lot of awkwarness, like the realization that you’ve been defriended…believe me that’s awkward.
Figure it out facebook…because you definitely have spent enough time coming up with crap that isn’t useful, I think you can take the 5 minutes it would take you to handle this
Digital Bookshelves…that maybe aren’t so full
So in class the other day, our teachers asked us if we read leisurely. I think I’ve read maybe 4 books over the past 12 months for pleasure and one of those was Harry Potter.
I’d like to read more and I think I’ll try to make that a priority over the summer but now that I have decided that, I would love to start using a tool like Delicious Library to catalog all the books that I have read so I can look back and maybe, just maybe feel like I have actually read a book or two and don’t feel bad about lack of leisurely reading.
A bargain hunter’s favorite tool
I can’t tell you how many times I have found the cutest dress or a jacket that I must have…only to find out that it’s about $100+ than I’m willing to spend. So of course being a member of the ADD generation I belong to, I forget about it and it never crosses my mind again. HOWEVER I found a new tool, which I’m not sure I’ll use because I’m tragically lazy, that will let you know when the price of an item falls. I read about it here .
I love finding things I on sale and since many websites run out of the standard sizes in a flash, leaving you with a choice between a size 00 and a size 14, I think this tool could alleviate some of the frustration of shopping.
Nifty Ideas
So there was a panel at the Future of Web Apps conference in Miami, where some big named techies weighed in on some nifty ideas…
Digg’s Kevin Rose came up with an idea about how to better manage his email, and how to communicate with people that he’s not really communicating with..stick with me, you’ll get it.
So we all get annoyed when someone takes FOREVER to respond to our emails, whether they are behind in general or they are just ignoring yours. His idea includes your mail keeping stats of your usage to friends can check how far behind you are on your mail (in which the article I read goes on to say anything past 48 hours is a dead conversation). The stats would include things like how many emails you’ve received today, your average response times etc.
Through the stats, your email could figure out your social network and alert you to when and who you should be responding to based on your past behavior (i.e. Email Your Sister!…ignore aunt susan’s chain mail)
Interesting idea, but the author does say:
“I am not convinced this would actually be a viable service. If I think you are a jerk for not responding to my emails, getting a notice that I am No. 300 in your queue is not going to make me feel any better about you.”
Mashup of fun or frustration?
In class we talked briefly about mashups, and while I still don’t know how they work, I can enjoy the results.
I came upon a site that features a mashup of Google Maps. It’s a Where’s Waldo-esque game where you are given a picture of a place in the world, a few clues and you have to find it on a global map. It’s hard to use and I didn’t have much like in placespotting but the idea behind it is very interesting
2008 Election: how to attractive the young voter
They have come to my house, through my mailbox and between my favorite television shows…advertisements for the 2008 Presidential candidates. But my mailbox is something I don’t do to too often and I have conditioned myself to ignore commericals so what is a better way to reach an audience made of up people like me?
I found a blog post about social networking as it related to the election:
“Whether we talk about the general, all-encompassing social emporiums of MySpace and Facebook or more specific cloud-based gathering grounds among the likes of My.BarackObama.com, we can all recognize collectively that modern social frameworks on the Web are remarkably efficient platforms and means with/by which messages can be relayed”
Not only is it campaign driven advertising on the web but it’s also the facebook groups, the event invitations for a debate, the profile pictures…they are everywhere
Traditional advertising is going out. How many print ads in a magazine do you actually stop to look at? How many commercials do you watch and take in what it was actually selling vs. the plot of the commercial. The world is adapting to it’s future, interative digital marketing
But I like it the way it is
YouTube is going live…but with what?
I am a YouTube lover. I have my favorite videos like everyone else. I go online to see a video someone told me about or about a story I’ve seen on the news (like the South American soccer player that got his leg shattered DFKFDSAF BARF).
So now that YouTube is going to start putting up live video, there are several questions that need to be answered:
1) What kind of things are going to be put up live? Seems like there are going to be new regulations with censorship and content as live feeds can be unpredictable.
2) Do we really need this? I can think of a few instances where I would like to watch live feed, such as a sporting event or concert that isn’t available to watch on TV or attend in person
3) How are traditional media outlets going to be affected?
Just some thoughts
Facebook: more organized or more chaotic?
It seems like everyday I get on facebook, something has been updated or changed.
Last week I wasn’t happy to see that when I clicked on my “friends” tab, that there were more tabs within my list of friends, having the friends with the newest status updates first. I don’t care about status updates! I just want to know if you broke up with your boyfriend over the weekend or see pictures of you dancing like a fool and thinking you look hot at the bar.
So I read an article talking about facebook tabs..my favorite. I understand that Facebook is trying to compete with MySpace, making in steamline and functional, but ever since the dumb 100 million applications got added, I can’t stand looking at certain people’s profiles. It’s too much work to find their update or their newly added pictures.
Keep it simple stupid
Google gets better
I love Google. I already am obsesses with Gmail and proudly have my Gmail notifier placed in the upper right hand corner or my desktop. After realizing that having a calender on my phone, on my computer, and on paper was too confusing to keep in sync, I discovered Google Calender….and it gets better
Sixteen months ago Google bought a service called Jotspot and have now reformed it as Google Sites. Google Sites which is a way for a company, team, or class to create a team site containing all the information they need.
Calendars. Videos. Attatchments. All available through your website and without the hassle and price of software, such as Microsoft’s Sharepoint.
Seems like another way they Google makes our social and business worlds easier, at no cost to us.
Web searches: Nicole Kidman and Botox
I chose to search Nicole Kidman and botox as my two categories, not related at all huh?
What I found…
Topic: Nicole Kidman
Google Results: A lot of news results. Sites ranged from imdb.com, wikipedia, #1 fansite, people.com, askmen.com
Blogline: Mediocre results. The first blog listed was something completely unrelated to Nicole Kidman. It was about Nikki Cox which contained a link which didn’t seem safe to open.. Some other results were from bbc’s films section for an upcoming movie entitled Margot At the Wedding. The main gossip I found was about Kidman drinking wine at the Oscars
BlogPulse: lot’s blogs, lots of unrelated information: myspace, wordpress, live journal, lots of blogs in Spanish about her, lot of Oscars/wine talk
Topic BOTOX
Bloglines: Some newspaper articles, mostly blogs that aren’t relevant at all
Blogpulse: Much better job of relevant articles. A lot of beauty blogs, blogs containing news releases, FDA news
Google: Ads, what it is, how it works, health.com, rxlist.com, youtube clips and photos of vanessa williams, commerically driven content
